Custom Fabrication

For more than 65 years, Magnetic Shield Corporation has been fabricating custom shielding and custom magnetic shields for an extraordinarily broad set of applications. If there is one thing we have learned, it is that manufacturing effective custom magnetic shielding is as much an art as it is a science. It calls for a thorough understanding of the nature of electromagnetic fields as well as the idiosyncrasies of the high Nickel content alloy used in electro magnetic shielding.

Unlike RFI (radio frequency interference), EMI (electromagnetic interference) cannot be simply blocked and reflected. It must be absorbed and redirected. Every situation has the potential to be different in some way from any other.

At Magnetic Shield Corporation, we have applied our magnetic shielding expertise to a wide range of industries, producing specialized, custom shielding for applications in aviation and aerospace, oil exploration, medical equipment, physics research, navigation, computers, telecommunication, automotive, military, CRT shields, and wall and room shields to name but a few.

Two recent applications should serve to define the Magnetic Shield difference:

A NASA collaborating university, working on the Swift Satellite Mission, came to us to design custom shielding to protect the satellite's critical XRT and UVOT instruments. This application called for an extremely precise magnetic shield to fit on the circuit board. The 6" x 4" x 2" magnetic shield, made of CO-NETIC AA alloy, had to match up with the precise solder points on the board, had to be accurate to +/- .003" and had to have 16 small apertures on one side. Working with an astrophysicist from the university, we developed a prototype. After final design approval we manufactured and delivered the custom shielding that went into space in 2004.

Working with the US Navy, our engineering team was asked to visit a new class of submarine being completed in the shipyards. The navigation system was experiencing anomalies caused by some of the sub's other systems. The navigation unit could not be dismounted or disassembled to allow for the electro magnetic shield's installation. To further complicate the task, the tightly packed confines of the sub severely limited the space available to move any type of custom shielding solution into place. Our engineers solved the problem with a split construction design that allowed the magnetic shield to be assembled within the tight restrictions and still meet the strict performance requirements. The custom shielding was fabricated, successfully tested by the Navy and installed, eliminating further magnetic interference problems.
