Introducing Our New Newsletter …
And Our 60th Anniversary Year
Welcome to Magnetic Shield News. Our new quarterly newsletter is devoted to providing you with facts, figures and information on a subject that characterizes our company and impacts your business in numerous technical, physical and financial ways. We are speaking, of course, about magnetic shielding.
This year Magnetic Shield Corporation celebrates our 60th anniversary. The company was founded in 1941 as the Perfection Mica Company, with Magnetic Shield as a division. Our original office was in the Chicago Civic Opera Building, with our manufacturing facility located on Elston Ave in Chicago. The company was focused initially on the design and manufacture of Mica wafers used to insulate transistors. The magnetic shielding division grew to such a dominant position that the company changed its name to Magnetic Shield Corporation. We moved to our present location in Bensenville, Illinois in 1969.
Founded by entrepeneurally-spirited engineers who were the "techno geeks" of their day, our company developed methods for creating high permeability alloys as a magnetic shielding that became more important as sensitive electronic applications began being utilized during WWII and beyond. Used to shield instruments such as airplane radar screens and gauges from outside magnetic interference, NETIC® and later CO-NETIC® shielding material from Magnetic Shield Corporation are now used in wide ranging applications tied to the tremendous growth of electronics.
Through more than a half century of innovation, Magnetic Shield Corporation has been involved in thousands of projects for our customers. We were instrumental quite early in the US Space program as a supplier of shields used in the Explorer IV Satellites, which discovered the Van Allen Belts, magnetic fields surrounding the Earth. Much closer to home, our shields allow sensitive check readers at checkout registers to function properly, protected from the interference created by the motors that move the checks through the machines.
Our shields are used in medical applications such as MRI installations and in schools, offices and factories to protect computer monitors from outside magnetic field interference. Magnetic Shield products can be found in airplanes and submarines as well as in guidance systems for missiles, heart monitors on exercise equipment, cellular phones, credit card readers, and in automobile "smart house" control networks … anywhere, in fact, where electronics can be affected by electromagnetic field interference.
As application needs for magnetic shielding continue to grow, we are presented with a stimulating and challenging future. It has been an exciting first 60 years for Magnetic Shield Corporation and we look forward to maintaining our "Preferred Source" leadership role in the years to come.
